This is a simple calculator that calculates the geometric properties of an I beam (also known as an H-beam, W-beam or Wide Flange Beam).
To use this app, enter the Flange Thickness, Flange Width, Web Thickness and Depth of the beam (diagram of what each dimension refers to is above with the screenshots). The app will then calculate the cross sectional area of the beam, as well as the Moment of Inertia, Radius of Gyration, and S for both the x-x (strong) and y-y (weak) axes, with units consistent with those inputted. It may be necessary to scroll down to see all of the calculated numbers.
If you wish to calculate Q, then you must also select the axis that you would like to calculate Q in relation to. The default is the x-x axis (strong axis), and this is almost always the desired choice. If you wish to calculate Q at a point that is not on the centroidal axis, you may also enter a distance in the "Distance from Centroid:" field corresponding to the location of your point.
This app is particularly useful for students in mechanics of materials, or others wishing to calculate stresses in a beam.
